To where forth with speed
Said the galloping steed
Who heeded the reigns
The bridle bit back and breathed
So accomplished so far
The horseman was the star
Of the humble horse hut
Where the she girl came up
To clean soot and stuff
That the animals huffed
And keep tidy and nice
Their habitat for a price
Enveloped by wind
The horseman he grins
And gathers his whip
And pressed forth on his chin
A helmet strap taut
As a good horseman aught
Ready to ride
Pay not in stride
The day’s bets were set
The crowd roared drank and wept
The gun fired at clouds
Round the race track of that town
As the day drew to eve
They prayed cursed and believed
As the eve turned to night
All seemed to be alright
The girls with their sleeves
Summer dresses and needs
Wide brim hats for the sun
Angled with flair for fun
And the men with their suits
Polished black shoes and boots
Black and blue jackets snug
Kissed the girls and gave hugs
Round the track did they go
And the libations flowed
Across the river sat there
A man alone in despair
He lost his last bet
He was all out of step
Was it his time now to go?
For him life’s nothing to show
He tilted his cup
And with a desperate push
Grabbed a brown bagged glass bottle
Up from out of the bush
The horseman he neared
The final last lap
And the whole summer crowd cheered
Men jeered ladies clapped
There was but one more round to go
He thought out the top of his mind
The trophy is mine
But enough of that, the line!
The white line on red clay
Semmed to wobble and shake
In the dirt the horse billowed forth
Like a hundred earthquakes
Speeding up from the rear
Was the lackluster named Brown
And Snow White in the middle
But then Black Lady went down
There was chaos and panic
The whole crowd was aghast
So much money and property
One injury could be the last
Out of luck out of time
The last lap chaos shakes
But ahead rode one horseman
The rest disaster their fate
He had a glow bout his aura
He smiled with glee
The rest pain and horror
In the stands anxiety
The wagers were down
The out of luck gone
There was only one left
At the final sound of the gong
Some made a killing
Some were dead broke
At the racetrack that Sunday
In a dark cloud of smoke
